Of course, as you would come to expect from this column, picking favourites is not the style as we go in search of the value for our daily horse racing bets and Saturday at the Curragh is no different
28/1 Each Way Selection for the Irish Oaks
Let's start with the Oaks then and point out that EVEN SONG should be ay all accounts be winning this race and we would not put anyone off backing her at odds, even though they are short, but we prefer to look for a better return on our investment and this can be achieved by finding one to place at good odds. You can bet on Even Song at a best priced 1.90 with Betfair at the time of writing
SOMEHOW won her first two outings this season and on of those was the Cheshire Paks at Chester - It's no mean feat. She would probably have done better in the Epsom Oaks but for such an aggressive ride. Although she is here as part of the Ballydoyle team to scoop this, she is not without ability, probably short of what Even Song is capable of but nonetheless more than capable of picking up a place.
At 28/1 with Betfair we are backing each way, if she finds a place it would be a better retun still than if we had backed the winner to win
What's the Plot for the Ladies Derby?
The plot may very well be WHATS THE PLOT. Whilst Suitor and Modem head the market I can ask a question or two about betting on the pair. Suitor is short enough at just 2/1 for the race. He is sure to have more improvement and after hitting 1000 winners yesterday Brian Ellison has booked none other than Nina Carberry to ride, but I am just a little concerned that we have not seen what he is capable of over this trip yet.
Modem is next best in the betting and you can back him to win at 5/1. He has been very consistent and I am very tempted to give him a chance at the price, he was only just beaten here over 2 miles previously and the drop in trip will not be an inconvenienced but this dual-purpose runner has had ten runs without a win now and could again find one too good.
There may be a chance that one could be WHATS THE PLOT. In true plot style, I am convinced there is far more up the sleeve of this one. The form of his three runs this year looks good enough, strangely the win at Wexford looking the worst of it, but the other two races at Ballinrobe and Leopardstown, in particular, look good - What will also bring about his best will the ground today, a bit quicker and we could see the improvement required to land a little bit of a surprise
