Understand betting markets

Betting means to lay a wager on the outcome of a match. The final result market is the most popular one, but there are plenty of other ways in which bettors can exercise their ability to foresee the course of events.

Take into consideration betting markets like both teams to score, total goals or even first goalscorer, correct score, player X to be booked etc.

Online bookies  are a must for on the go betting during the world cup, and more than one offers the punter a choice of markets and odds that can be quite different for games, offering a better return with one bookie for a correct prediction than with another. It is always advisable to have more than one bookmaker app on your mobile phone.

Prior to placing any tips, a bettor should carefully look over the betting markets available for that particular game and come to betting the bets he sees as most suitable and with the bookmaker offering the best World Cup Matches odds

World Cup odds

The odds are the value system used in betting that say how likely an event is to happen and how much money you can get out of the respective bet.

Odds are generally settled by online bookmakers, but there are Exchange platforms, like Betfair’s which allows you to stake against each other, thus the odds are being set depending on the wagers of bettors. You will usually get much better odds on the Betfair exchange than at a traditional online bookmaker

Basic odds and returns explained
  • 9/1 for every £1 you bet, you will win £9.
  • 4/1 for every £1 you bet, you will win £4.
  • 1/1 for every £1 you bet, you will win £1.
  • 1/4 for every £4 you bet, you will win £1.

Risks and rewards of World Cup betting

Since betting requires you to risk money for their wagers, one must know there are certain risks involved.
  • You should bet money you cannot afford losing, no matter the level of confidence you have in your predictions
  • If you or a friend of yours need help with betting addiction, please make sure you seek help and contact GamCare.
  • Risks in betting are existent but manageable. Rewards, on the contrary, can be extremely satisfying.
  • There are few things in life that bring you the joy of a successful bet. It’s a bet you spent time for, looking and analyzing the bookie offers, pondering, wondering what the level of the stake should be and so on.
  • Watching a World Cup game and seeing your bet turning out to be a winner is one of the most fulfilling feelings one football lover can experience.
  • Avoiding betting on a tricky game can be a wise decision, whilst increasing your stake on a certain bet you’re confident of can also turn out to be an intelligent move.

Setting your budget for World Cup betting

As previously mentioned, you should never bet money you cannot afford to lose.

Setting a budget for World Cup betting should be made in regard to what you can afford to lose, there are no guaranteed winners.

Try putting a maximum limit of money you will use betting on the World Cup, so that you make sure you are not going to spend more than planned. Perhaps deposit this at the start so you know exactly where you stand at all times. This is often a great tactic as a new bookmaker will often match your first deposit, so rather than deposit €100 in total, gaining a €20 bonus at the beginning and depositing a further 4 x €20, deposit the entire €100 at the start, you can gain €100 bonus from the get go - Here is one example

If the Russia 2018 World Cup will be the first World Cup you bet on, it’d rather be advisable to keep your budget low and try just a few different types of bets, in order to see which suit you best.

The format of the World Cup

There are 32 national teams qualified to the World Cup.

Except for the hosting nation, Russia in this case, every participating country gained its access to the competition winning several games in qualifiers.

As a hosting nation, Russia did not play in the qualifiers, but they stayed in shape during the past 2 years playing friendly games against other national teams.

The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four. From each group of four, the first two teams qualify for the round of 16. Places 3 and 4 in the group stages are knocked out of the competition.

The qualifying teams earn their access to the last 16 phase of the competition by gaining points. A won match is worth 3 points in the rankings, a draw is worth 1 point for both sides and losing a game is, obviously, worth zero points.

Each team plays one match with every opponent in the group. It is a group of four,  consequently, every team will play 3 matches.

What is the tiebreaker for the World Cup group stages?

In case 2 teams find themselves with an equal number of points at the end of the group stages, the 6 tiebreakers will be used in order to establish the qualifying team.
  • Tiebreaker 1: goal difference in all 3 group matches (subtract total goals scored from total goals conceded)
  • Tiebreaker 2: goals scored in all 3 group matches
  • Tiebreaker 3: head-to-head result
  • Tiebreaker 4: goal difference in head-to-head matches (only applies if there are more than 2 teams tied)
  • Tiebreaker 5: goals scored in head-to-head games (only used if there are more than 2 teams tied)
  • Tiebreaker 6: coin flip
Tiebreaker 6 was never needed up to now in the FIFA World Cup.

Beginning with the last 16 phase of the competition, the World Cup becomes a knock-out contest.

One team can lose a match in the group stages and still qualify afterwards, but a lost game in the knock-out stages means World Cup exit.

In the last 16,  first-placed  teams in the group stages face second-placed teams.

The winners advance into the last 8, then come the semifinals.

The winners of the semifinals qualify for the World Cup Final, while the losers will face each other in the third spot game.

The winning team of the World Cup final is declared the champion  of the world.
