Opening Allianz Hurling League Fixtures 2018

The opening weekend of fixtures in Division 1A sees games from Cork, Clare & Waterford. In Division 1B games come from Dublin, Galway & Limerick.

While nothing is ever decided in week one or throughout the league campaign in terms of provincial or All-Ireland glory, Galway can be thrown up as an example of how a good league campaign can lead teams to bigger successes.

After thrashing the then reigning All-Ireland champions Tipperary in the league final, they went on to win the Leinster title and beat Waterford in the All-Ireland final. They certainly cited that game against Tipperary as a turning point for a county who had been also-rans for a long time. It gave them the belief that they could go on to pick up the Liam McCarthy Cup.

They didn’t manage to gain promotion to Division 1A last year so will again be in 1B. We saw last year that this didn’t affect them whatsoever as they went on a remarkable campaign throughout the year. It’s less of a factor this year perhaps as the new provincial structure in Munster & Leinster sees teams play each other once rather than the old knockout structure where if you lost one game, you were immediately out and into the qualifiers.

    Provincial Championship Fixtures 2018

A brand new structure for this year’s campaign with Munster & Leinster sides facing each other once. The top two sides will then contest their respective provincial finals on July 1st.

The All-Ireland final will take place on August 19th.

  • What is the best bet for the 2018 All-Ireland?

The hurling championship has been blown wide open as we saw two teams in Waterford & Galway, who hadn’t won the title for some considerable time, contest the All-Ireland final in September.

Cork also performed very well in last year’s championship, winning the Munster title and making it to the All-Ireland semi-final. This year could well see Tipperary jump back into the fold. Despite their problems last year, they still pushed Galway all the way in their semi-final and it took a last-gasp Joe Canning wonder score to seal the deal.

We’re likely to be in for more enthralling matches throughout the summer as the gap between five or six counties currently looks quite small. Galway will no doubt be respected after their exploits last year and will be hungry to retain the title. If they were to do so, it would be one hell of an achievement.
